Start weight : 165 kg
Current weight : 94 kg
Current lost : 71 kg
Surgery date : November 2019
When I made the decision to undergo Weight Loss Surgery, I researched the procedure in Australia and Thailand. Ultimately, it came down to three things. Firstly, the cost in Australia was quite high, secondly the wait times here for public funded surgery were long and difficult to access and finally, the aftercare clearly was superior at Destination Beauty.
At my heaviest I weighed in at 168 kilos. On surgery day, I was approximately 165 kg. I have managed to maintain my current weight of 94 kg for 18 months.
The change in my life has been huge. I now reach for clothes are the front of the rack (not way up the back), the clothes I wear no longer have an X associated with them. My self-esteem has improved too, always a plus.
The level of care was incredible. The nurses were attentive to my needs and clearly were able to deal with all issues that presented. Being able to recover in a private room, with a support person, was also far more conducive to a smooth recovery. The surgeons that I encountered were excellent and put me at ease throughout the whole procedure, again, the level of aftercare (length of time in post-surgery care) was far superior to what was available in Australia.
Any tips to manage to lose so much weight?
You will work out what is good for you. For me, I “grazed” across the day for the fist 6 months, small snacks that kept my energy high and allowed me to feel full. High protein meals from a small bowl and listening to my body. The moment I felt “full” I stopped eating. I did not (and I still try not to) eat after 6pm and do not eat before 8am. Training myself to fast for that period really helped me lose weight and maintain my current weight. Now I am maintaining my weight I am not as strict with myself; however, I am strict in what I do not eat. No fried foods, no soft drinks and I do not drink alcohol.
How's your life changed after having weight loss surgery?
It is hard to imagine my life pre surgery. I often look back on photos and wonder who the fat man looking back at me is. My energy levels are incredible, I do not suffer from a sore back/knee any longer and my health has improved, lower blood pressure, sleep apnea has cleared.
Finally, Matt also wanted to tell people who are still making their decisions that "It is difficult, there is no doubt about it. You will need to make substantial changes to your life if you want to lose weight and keep it off. If possible, take a support person with you or use the support of the other clients who are there at the same time. Do your research! Ask questions through your Destination Beauty rep, join the Facebook page, there are loads of great posts on how to navigate the procedure and remember take your time. This is life changing surgery, and it will be the best decision you make, but do not rush into it." :)
